Dental work 21st June 2022

  Been a while since I updated what was going on.

There is a new spare wheel well in the boot and Today I relocated car in shed so I could better work on the front.
Like the rear a solid object had bumped the front when little Minx was living a neglected previous life.
I straightened the bumper  and left it the way it was.
Now I need to reshape the opening and fit the new grille that Christine so kindly provided.
An easier task than straightening the bent original.

It seems that little Minx encountered a post or tree at some stage. This bent the bumper back and reshaped the grille and surrounding area. As I mentioned previously I pulled the bumper straight, but left the ding in the grille as it would not prevent me getting a roadworthy and registering it for use,

I will apply some pull tp the bent parts, and coax them around slightly to resume their original shape.
It may need a little heat at the buckle points as well.

 It was all going so well, the "easy" task of straightening the pushed in face and making it like new. The few visible little rust holes to clean up and weld in some patches. In the last page I mentioned some classic Minx rust spots and posted a few pictures. However as with all rust what you see is just the very tip of the iceberg as a much larger amount is out of sight waiting to sink SS Titanic.  Now these rust spots do not start where you see them inside the engine bay where it is warm and dry and being a Hillman an oil film tends to cover surfaces. The problem started with the Rootes design that has a little dirt trap under the guards up out of sight where it can't be seen. Now if you hose out underneath on a regular basis and avoid roads where salt is added in winter there will not be a problem. So the hidden part collects "stuff" which holds moisture, and as we all know Fe + H20 = RUST. Eventually the little shelf rusts through and dirt and moisture enter...

So we sat and waited for two years for the OLD Bloke to get on with it, September 2024.

Been tinkering again after a long period of distractions. Traveling, visiting, eating and all that time consuming stuff old folk seem to do. First task was to get the Californian running and back in the front shed. The overdrive had been causing issues and I decided to refit the original four speed to get it back on the road, with the help of a set of 3.89 gears I pulled out of a Hunter some time ago. Had always believed what I was told, that they would not work in the original Mk VIII housing. Seems I was misled and the Hypoid bevel centre section goes straight in, just changed the dif spider gears to match the coarse spline axles.  Clean out half the shed so I have plenty of room and popped 66M1NX in the middle up on stands Next step to refresh memory of where we  had got to. Minx adjusts my priorities....again December 2021

   The 66 series VI Minx has pushed to the front of the work priority list again. What can I say she is a pushy little Minx and is or was currently running and road legal Just went over the brakes with all new seals to master and slaves. Found a blocked hose to the rear brakes which may have explained the poor braking. Jim Withers to the rescue and new hose to complete the job. Some pictures of it as work progressed The self adjusting rear slave cylinders had been played with by a previous owner and were non functional so a little re-engineering to make them work as they should. The design of the little ratchet adjusters seems strange to be with parts that look like they should be assembled differently. Some creative work was also needed with the handbrake  as it had also been "improved" by a previous repair.
